Tip

Before the meeting ends, ensure that every identified follow-up is owned by a meeting attendee. Plan for the time this takes when preparing the meeting.

If a meeting results in follow-up tasks, it is important to clearly identify who will be accountable (i.e. owns the outcome) for each item before the meeting concludes. Without this clarity, the effectiveness of the meeting outcome is likely reduced. Therefore, plan for dedicated time during the meeting to define the follow-up actions and establish accountability to ensure they are getting done.

Accountability is created through a social contract that depends on the agreement of all parties involved. Therefore, it is often more effective when meeting participants volunteer to take ownership of follow-up tasks rather than having owners assigned to them .
